Crossing Between Worlds by Jeanne M. Simonelli Summary

The Navajo people of Canyon de Chelly must negotiate a delicate balance between the old and the new as they struggle to maintain their traditional ways of life in the midst of archaeologists, U.S. Park Service employees, and the increasing numbers of tourists who come to visit this hauntingly beautiful part of northeastern Arizona. Anthropologist-writer Jeanne Simonelli, who worked at Canyon de Chelly as a seasonal park ranger, interweaves stories of her personal experiences and friendships with canyon residents with discussions of native history and culture in the region. Focusing on the members of one extended Navajo family, Simonelli describes the small moments of their daily lives: shearing goats, baking bread, attending a solemn all-night health ceremony, washing clothes at the local laundromat, playing traditional games and contemporary sports, talking about the history of the Dinthe Navajo peopleand pondering the changes they have witnessed in the canyon and the difficulties they confront. Crossing Between Worlds is sumptuously illustrated with insightful black-and-white photographs that document the everyday activities of Navajo families in one of the most spectacular corners of the American Southwest.

Otherwise Worlds by Tiffany Lethabo King,Jenell Navarro,Andrea Smith Summary

The contributors to Otherwise Worlds investigate the complex relationships between settler colonialism and anti-Blackness to explore the political possibilities that emerge from such inquiries. Pointing out that presumptions of solidarity, antagonism, or incommensurability between Black and Native communities are insufficient to understand the relationships between the groups, the volume's scholars, artists, and activists look to articulate new modes of living and organizing in the service of creating new futures. Among other topics, they examine the ontological status of Blackness and Indigeneity, possible forms of relationality between Black and Native communities, perspectives on Black and Indigenous sociality, and freeing the flesh from the constraints of violence and settler colonialism. Throughout the volume's essays, art, and interviews, the contributors carefully attend to alternative kinds of relationships between Black and Native communities that can lead toward liberation. In so doing, they critically point to the importance of Black and Indigenous conversations for formulating otherwise worlds. Contributors Maile Arvin, Marcus Briggs-Cloud, J. Kameron Carter, Ashon Crawley, Denise Ferreira da Silva, Chris Finley, Hotvlkuce Harjo, Sandra Harvey, Chad B. Infante, Tiffany Lethabo King, Jenell Navarro, Lindsay Nixon, Kimberly Robertson, Jared Sexton, Andrea Smith, Cedric Sunray, Se’mana Thompson, Frank B. Wilderson

Cheshire Crossing by Andy Weir Summary

In a one-of-a-kind graphic novel collaboration between the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Martian and the beloved illustrator behind Sarah’s Scribbles, Alice, Wendy, and Dorothy team up to save the multiverse, from Wonderland to Neverland and Oz. Originating as fan fiction from the brilliant imagination of Andy Weir, now brought to vivid life by Sarah Andersen, Cheshire Crossing is a funny, breakneck, boundlessly inventive journey through classic worlds as you’ve never seen them before. Years after their respective returns from Wonderland, Neverland, and Oz, the trio meet here, at Cheshire Crossing—a boarding school where girls like them learn how to cope with their supernatural experiences and harness their magical world-crossing powers. But Alice, Wendy, and Dorothy—now teenagers, who’ve had their fill of meddling authority figures—aren’t content to sit still in a classroom. Soon they’re dashing from one universe to the next, leaving havoc in their wake—and, inadvertently, bringing the Wicked Witch and Hook together in a deadly supervillain love match. To stop them, the girls will have to draw on all of their powers . . . and marshal a team of unlikely allies from across the magical multiverse. Advance praise for Cheshire Crossing “Deliciously funny . . . a shrewd and spirited adaptation that will leave audiences hoping for another installment . . . Andersen’s delightful cartoon drawing style meshes perfectly with Weir’s prose, allowing the work to broaden its appeal beyond middle graders to young adults and adults.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

A work both of vision and fancy - Jupiter, for instance, proves to be a jungle world, with flesh-eating plants, vampire bats, giant snakes, mastodons and flying lizards - the novel is Astor's best known work. One of the richest people in the world in the early 20th century, Astor was tragically lost at sea in the sinking of the RMS Titanic.

Crossing the Lines of Caste by Adheesh A. Sathaye Summary

What does it mean to be a Brahmin, and what could it mean to become one? Over the years, intellectuals and dogmatists have offered plenty of answers to the first question, but the latter presents a cultural puzzle, since normative Brahminical ideology deems it impossible for an ordinary individual to change caste without first undergoing death and rebirth. There is, however, one notable figure in the Hindu mythological tradition who is said to have transformed himself from a king into a Brahmin by amassing great ascetic power, or tapas: the ornery sage Visvamitra. Through texts composed in Sanskrit and vernacular languages, oral performances, and visual media, Crossing the Lines of Caste examines the rich mosaic of legends about Visvamitra found across the Hindu mythological tradition. It offers a comprehensive historical analysis of how the "storyworlds" conjured up through these various tellings have served to adapt, upgrade, and reinforce the social identity of real-world Brahmin communities, from the ancient Vedic past up to the hypermodern present. Using a performance-centered approach to situate the production of the Visvamitra legends within specific historical contexts, Crossing the Lines of Caste reveals how and why mythological culture has played an active, dialogical role in the construction of Brahmin social power over the last three thousand years.

The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells Summary

No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied. Yet across the gulf of space, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. Then, late one night, in the middle of the English countryside, they landed.

The Summoner of Basingstoke by David Mosey Summary

Albions most powerful occult professional, the black mage Montmorency, wants a "Designated Opposite" that is a fellow professional against whom he can test his skills in friendly (and not so friendly) competition. He has applied several times to the free Dragons (the most intelligent beings in any of the known universes) requesting that under the terms of the Unified Code, they locate the appropriate master of the occult arts and sciences. All the Free Dragons have done so far is assure him that his request is receiving their attention, but now Montmorency has found a way to get their urgent attention. He has hatched a fiendish plot to impose economic efficiency, modern management systems and spreadsheets on the land of Albion. With the support of two evil and powerful noblemen he threatens to flood Albion with MBAs from the parallel world known as Earth Three-- a primitive, world where occult evolution has stalled. To ensure success, Montmorency has stolen the Ward of Summoning, an immensely potent occult artifact. There is now no way to stop him by conventional occult means. The Free Dragons know Montmorency must be stopped, and because they never (well, hardly ever) interfere directly in human affairs they have called upon Albions most notorious band of adventurers, Mission Implausible, to do the job. The band would normally be assigned a mage-- an expert in the theory and practice of magic-- to deal with Montmorency. But because he has the Ward, the Free Dragons have decided to use more primitive means. They have arranged to transfer a mathematician from Earth Three to invoke the Summoner of Basingstoke, and stop Montmorencys scheme in its tracks. Unfortunately even the Free Dragons are not totally infallible... Thus it comes to pass that the totally non-mathematical Andrew Cruickshank, having gone to on sleep in a Cumbrian hotel on Earth Three on the eve of a climbing holiday, wakes up to find himself in a completely alien world, in possession of a lethally temperamental magicians staff, and in the company of five people who expect him to do magic on demand. His talents in that area have hitherto been limited to a few transparent card tricks, so the prospects appear unpromising. And his attempts to use Tarot 5.1, Albions industry-standard spell system, are catastrophically unpredictable. However it soon turns out he has other valuable talents... With the help of these, and Mission Implausible?s robust, uncompromising approach to conflict resolution, the band of adventurers sweeps across Albion leaving confusion, destruction and broken glasses in their wake until they reach Basingstoke. There, deep in the bowels of the Basingstoke Old Peoples Community Centre and Bingo Hall, Andrew Cruickshank finds he must fight for his life against a lethal duellist before he can invoke the Summoner of Basingstoke... MORE ABOUT ALBION Albion is a small island nation in the north temperate zone. While it seems insignificant enough, not only is it home to a pugnacious, independent-minded people, it is also home to the Free Dragons. The Free Dragons are the wisest beings in any of the possible universes; they mastered the art and science of magic at about the time everybody else was sitting around waiting for the pleistocene era to get started. They live beneath the Mountains of Dark Crystal on Albions west coast, a location rigorously enough isolated to deter even the most determined political canvasser; the Free Dragons like their privacy. Though they never (well, hardly ever) involve themselves in human affairs, they maintain informal contact with a number of Albions more senior occult professionals. The only reason the Free Dragons have not been adopted as gods is that they have never shown any interest whatsoever in turning people into stone, demanding human sacrifices, laying waste to whole cities, or c
